{"id":1034,"date":"2014-08-28T23:34:46","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T23:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/services\/international\/?page_id=1034"},"modified":"2026-03-02T11:23:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T17:23:10","slug":"cpt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/services\/international\/international-students\/resources\/employment\/cpt\/","title":{"rendered":"Curricular Practical Training (CPT)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"intro\">Through Curricular Practical Training (CPT), an F-1 student may participate in an\u00a0alternate work\/study, internship or cooperative education program as part of their curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>CPT is defined to include any other type of\u00a0required internship or practicum which is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.\u00a0{8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(i)}<\/p>\n<h3>Eligibility<\/h3>\n<p>In order to be eligible for CPT, you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You must have been a full time student for at least one academic year, and you must be in<br \/>\nvalid F-1 status now. You may engage in CPT before the end of one full academic year only<br \/>\nif you are registered student in a graduate program that requires all enrolled students to<br \/>\nobtain work experience in the first academic year.<\/li>\n<li>You must be in good academic status (Cumulative GPA above 2.0)<\/li>\n<li>You must be making normal progress toward degree completion<\/li>\n<li>Internship\/practicum is an integral part of your degree requirement (fulfilling major requirements or<br \/>\nmajor electives.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Important notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you change employers, or change from part-time to full-time employment or vice versa, you need to re-apply for CPT permission.<\/li>\n<li>Beginning to work before CPT is authorized, or continuing to work after the authorization expires, constitutes a violation of F-1 status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Application Checklist<\/h3>\n<p>In order for the International Program Center to authorize CPT, you must submit all documents to the IPC:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/services\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/03\/BSU-CPT-Application-form-March-2026-1.pdf\">BSU CPT Application Form<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>To be completed by the student and their advisor\/department chair.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Register for the internship\/practicum course (print out of your course schedule)<\/li>\n<li>Job offer letter from your employer.\n<ul>\n<li>The letter must be on the employer&#8217;s letterhead (including name and address) and include the following:\n<ol>\n<li>Your job title<\/li>\n<li>Briefly describe the work you will do<\/li>\n<li>A start date and end date of your employment<\/li>\n<li>The number of hours per week you will work<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Optional Practical Training (OPT)<\/h5>\n<p>Any F-1 student who undertakes 12 months of full-time CPT (that is, 21 or more hours per week) is ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) following completion of studies.\u00a0Part-time CPT (20 hours or fewer per week) is not counted against OPT.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Reduced Course Load<\/h5>\n<p>Students undertaking part-time CPT are required to be enrolled full time or to have a current &#8220;Reduced Course load Form&#8221; on file.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Through Curricular Practical Training (CPT), an F-1 student may participate in an\u00a0alternate work\/study, internship or cooperative education program as part of their curriculum.
