The process of choosing your major takes time, and doesn&rsquo;t always happen on a perfect timeline. We want to support your decision with the step-by-step guide below.<\/p>\n<h2>Steps to Choosing Your Major: A Guided Process<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Self-Examine<\/h3>\n<p>Evaluate your abilities, interests, values and personality to understand which areas of study best suit you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/services\/career\/\">Career Advancement<\/a><br>\nLocated in Decker Hall 202, Career Advancement offers assessments and workshops for undecided students or those considering changing their major. Measure your interests, abilities, values and personality through assessment instruments such as DISCOVER, Self Directed Search (SDS) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Career Advancement also provides one-on-one appointments to interpret your assessment results as well as the Choosing a Major workshop designed for undecided students or those considering changing their major.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationplanner.org\/students\/self-assessments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Self Assessments<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a><br>\nAssess your goals, interests, abilities and values personally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 2: Explore<\/h3>\n<p>Gather information about majors and occupations that align with your self-examination findings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/academics\/catalog\/\">91̽»¨ Catalog<\/a><br>\nRead through the descriptions of each area of interest.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/services\/career\/career-outlook\/\">Career Outlooks by Major<\/a><br>\nProvided by Career Services, Career Outlooks by Major will allow you to gather information such as Major Highlights, Projected Demand, Placement, Employers and Job Titles for each area of study at 91̽»¨.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/OOH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Occupational Outlook Handbook<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a><br>\nSearch by occupation or job title to gather information about training and qualification required to enter into a specified field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 3: Focus<\/h3>\n<p>Narrow down your options to majors and careers that genuinely interest you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/services\/student-success-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2022\/01\/Interview-Worksheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interview Worksheet<\/a><br>\nUse this sheet to guide you through interviews of students, faculty and\/or professionals in the areas that you have identified as possible majors of study.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/services\/student-success-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2022\/01\/Job-Shadow-Experience-Worksheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Job Shadow Experience Worksheet<\/a><br>\nUse this sheet to guide you through a valuable job shadow experience with a professional in an area a possible area of study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 4: Implement<\/h3>\n<p>Combine the information from steps 1 through 3 and make your decision.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/mybsu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/Personal-Data-Form-24-25-updated-4.10.24b.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Data Form<\/a><br>\nWhen you are ready to declare a major you will need to complete the Academic Program section of the Student Data Form and turn this form into the Records Office to process the change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Advisor Change Request<\/strong><br>\nYou will also need to change your advisor to a faculty member from the department of your new major.
